Ever green Richard Britton had the biggest smile on his face at the end of the Macau Grand Prix this morning after the Enniskillen rider finished in a super seventh position, giving him the title of best newcomer to the circuit in 2003.
Riding the excellent ETI Suzuki, which was kindly donated to Richard for the meeting by ETI boss Alistair Flanagan, Britton was at home on the machine for the duration of the 15 lap race.
" I feel exhausted" grinned Richard. That was really hard work out there. The heat is unbelievable under the helmet. I settled into a steady rhythm early on and got a really good start. I was up in fifth place at the end of lap one but I still was a little to slow into some of the corners as I was not 100% sure about the track. I tried to hang onto Ian Lougher and Stuart Easton but was unable to but I knew that if I maintained my position I would have a really good result. Geoff May and Jeremy Toye were the men behind me and I decided just to sit and try and keep them at bay. Thank fully I did. It’s hard to tell just how satisfying this result really is. I am forever grateful to the ETI Team and Ian Simpson for all there help over this past week. I just hope that I justified there faith in me. Now I am of for a beer" .
The race was won of course by Michael Rutter in a time of 37m 43.456s with John McGuinness second also on a Ducati. Scotsman Brian Morrison took third, with Markus Barth 4th and Stuart Easton 5th.
Alan Patterson retired on lap six, while Martin Finnegan retired on lap three. Ryan Farquhar who was in the top six early on finished way down 27th place after suffering machine problems.
Richard set his fastest lap of the week in the race with a lap time of 2m 32s.
Weather: Dry Warm and 29 degrees..
